How To Make an Action Plan
So, how do you know where to start? First, revisit your My Plan workseet. Take some time to reflect on each area of healthcare, the individual goals you’ve listed within them, and how focusing on this area of your healthcare might improve your overall well-being. Answer the following questions:
On a scale from 0-10 (with 0 being low and 10 being high):
- How IMPORTANT is making a change in this area of your healthcare to you right now?
- How CONFIDENT are you in making changes in this area?
Which areas of your healthcare did you answer 7 or above for both importance and confidence? These are likely the areas you should start with to give yourself the best shot at success.
If you didn’t answer 7 or above for any of the areas, that’s ok, too. Which aspect of healthcare is highly important to you is likely to change over time. Revisit this question throughout your journey to make sure that your goals are aligned with your current healthcare priority.
Or perhaps there is an area of healthcare that is very important to you, but for which you aren’t too confident you can make change. Ask yourself what it would take for you to increase your confidence in that area. (People have more success with their action plans when their confidence is 7 or higher.) Think about ways you might be able to modify your plan to boost your confidence in being able to follow through with it. For example, you could change the frequency or timing of your plan, or if your plan is location-specific, perhaps you could think of a location that is more convenient for you. You could break your weekly action plan into two or more parts, and simply focus on one part this week. Or, you could recruit a friend or loved one to help you achieve your plan.
We encourage you to break up all your healthcare goals into smaller, attainable action plans. Celebrate the small victories along the way, and take solace in the fact that journeys are naturally full of detours and dead-ends; you can always change directions and stop for a rest along the way.
